Albert Handell: Weekend With the Masters Instructor

Pastelist and oil painter Albert Handell was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937. He began formal studies of drawing and anatomy at the age of 16, and in 1954 enrolled at the Art Students League of New York to study drawing and anatomy with Louis Priscilla and Robert Ward Johnson, and later studied painting for two years with Frank Mason.

From 1961 to 1965, Handell lived and traveled in and throughout Europe. In Paris, he painted independently in his own studio, working from the model at LEcole de la Grande Chaumiere and at the Louvre, copying the works of many of the Old Masters housed there. Since 1961, he has had more than 30 solo shows–including a pastel retrospective in 2007 at the Butler Institute of American Art, in Youngstown, Ohio–and he has received more than 70 prizes and awards from national and international organizations. Mr. Handell has received grants from the John F. and Anna Lee Stacy Foundation and from the Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation, Montreal Canada.

His paintings are in numerous private and public collections and museums. The artist has authored or co-authored numerous instructional art books on his oil painting techniques, and he is a nationally and internationally sought after instructor. For a period of fifteen years, 1960-1975, Albert Handells pastels were included in every book published on pastels in the U.S.A. His pastels enjoy international reputation. In 1987, The Pastel Society of America elected him into the Pastel Hall of Fame and The Pastel Society of the West Coast later bestowed on him their first ever lifetime achievement award. Handells work is in numerous private and public collections and museums, and he is currently represented by Ventana Fine Art Gallery, in Santa Fe; Portnoy Galleries, in Carmel, California; and Third Canyon Gallery, in Denver.
